The loose definition of a gemologist is “one who studies gemstones”.  Taken at face value, we could all be gemologists!  Of course, there is much more to defining a gemologist than simply studying gemstones.  Becoming a truly qualified gemologist takes years of intensive study and experience, both in technical knowledge and in common sense as to how to apply that knowledge.

Becoming a properly trained gemologist means receiving accredited gemological training, and passing the requirements to get a diploma in gemology. There are several qualified institutions providing this training, such as the Gemology Institute of America (GIA), American Gemologists Society (AGS), and the Diamond Council of America (DCA).  As a consumer, make sure that whoever you deal with has certifications from one or more of these organizations.
