Founded in 1851, incorporated in 1855, The Village of Glendale is believed to be the very first planned suburban community and the first planned railroad commuter town in the U.S.

In 1976 the National Park Service awarded Historic Glendale the designation of National Historic Landmark District for its unique nature and contributions to American planning and development. Glendale is one of three National Historic Landmark Districts in Ohio and the only one that is an inhabited and vital community.
